Directed by Mel Gibson, The Passion of the Christ was brought out in the cinemas in 2004. The film covers the religious ideals of Christianity direct from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John from the New Testament section of the Christian Bible. You do not have to be religious or even a Christian to watch this film and enjoy it. Yes, it is religious in theme but it is still a Hollywood film that can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone regardless of religious belief.
The Passion of the Christ mainly deals with the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus although it does feature flashbacks into his earlier life as a carpenter and his childhood. Other important parts of the film cover how Jesus saved Mary Magdalene from being stoned to death and the Sermon on the Mount. The Last Supper is also shown in great detail long with some small parts involving his resurrection after his death. The film is not in English and English subtitles are used. The main language used throughout the film is a combination of Latin, Hebrew and Aramaic which was translated and the dialogue created by the esteemed Professor Fr. William J. Fulco who works for the Loyola Marymount University. He helped greatly in the film to keep everything as time specific as possible so that the mood and set of the film would be accurate.
With very mixed reviews and thoughts behind this film from every angle, it is definitely a film you need to watch and make up your own mind about. But the public did speak the loudest above the critics and peers, with The Passion of the Christ becoming a massive hit at the Box Office taking in over three hundred and seventy million dollars in the US alone. Because of the massive pour of people all going to the cinema to watch this controversial film, it became the highest non speaking English film in history.
The Passion of the Christ is actually quite violent in parts especially in the crucifixion scenes so be aware of this before watching, although to truly understand this film you do need to watch it in full. Because of the ground breaking work that this film managed to set a new standard in religious themed films. Many different films and documentaries were only produced after this film as the first step to destroying the Taboo surrounding making films like The Passion of the Christ had begun.
A definite must watch, The Passion of the Christ is only suitable for adults to watch as the violence and themes in the film are not suitable for children to watch.
